How to tell when your device needs an upgrade
With new tech being released all the time, it can be hard to know when you should upgrade an older device.
But upgrading your device isn’t just about having the latest gadget. An up-to-date device is safer and more efficient, so we’ve laid out some signs to look out for that might let you know when it’s time to replace that old device you’ve been hanging on to.
5 signs that tell you it’s time for an upgrade
1. your device is slow and laggy
Slow performance is a major indicator. If your device takes an eternity to boot up, or to do the usual functions you use it for, then it might be on it’s last legs. If you use something daily, any slowdown or performance hitch is going to make an impact. Making sure that the tools you use most are in working order will save you time and sanity. Weigh up the cost with how much time those performance slows are costing you, it might be worth the upgrade!
2. It's frequently freezing and/or crashing
Does your device freeze or restart often? Crashes are another bad sign. If it’s crashing a lot, it might mean that the hardware can no longer keep up with what you need it for. Freezing and crashing can also be a massive negative impact on your productivity. Imagine working on a document on your computer and losing everything when it crashes, or taking 20 minutes to type a simple email.
3. The battery life is getting shorter and shorter
A healthy device should last most of the day on one charge. If your device isn’t making it through the day, that’s another red flag.
Check to see if your battery is swollen. This is a safety hazard and should be dealt with immediately. If your device often overheats, the battery may be malfunctioning. These are some pretty serious issues that, in most cases, mean it's time to organise a replacement.
4. Your storage is constantly full
Do you find yourself wishing for more storage? New apps and app updates can take up a lot of space. If you are unable to delete some to make space, this can be another good reason to look at upgrading your phone or laptop.
5. The Repairs are costing too much
Is the cost to repair the device getting more expensive? Second hand devices are cheaper and the longer a model has been around, the cheaper it’ll be. If the cost of replacing your current device with a similar model, then it’s probably time to look at replacing it.
